Hello Friends of Son Light,
Today (May 7) is the National Day of Prayer. While we are unable to gather together and pray you can still participate in the celebration online at lancasterndp.com at 7:00pm.
And while this is a special day for prayer let’s remember NDP is not the only day we pray. Prayer is a necessary part of our daily walk as Christ followers. It is our way of communicating directly with the Creator of the universe. What a privilege! Old Testament saints had to go through a priest but because of the sacrifice made by Jesus our sins are washed clean and we are able to enter into the presence of the Lord through prayer.
The scriptures are filled with instructions and reasons and results concerning prayer. Let me share just a few.
How should we pray? Hebrews 5:7, “IN THE DAYS OF HIS FLESH, JESUS OFFERED UP PRAYERS AND SUPPLICATIONS, WITH LOUD CRIES AND TEARS, TO HIM WHO WAS ABLE TO SAVE HIM FROM DEATH, AND HE WAS HEARD BECAUSE OF HIS REVERENCE.” (emphasis mine)
We need to come to God the same as we do in worship, with reverence. And the question why we should pray is also answered in this verse; if Jesus needed to pray, how much more do we need to pray!
To whom do we pray? Matthew 6:9, “PRAY THEN LIKE THIS: ‘OUR FATHER IN HEAVEN, HALLOWED BE YOUR NAME…’” Our prayers are to God the Father who is Holy (hallowed). Notice the reverence again. We are able to approach the Father because of Jesus. John 16:23, “TRULY, TRULY, I TELL YOU, WHATEVER YOU ASK THE FATHER IN MY NAME, HE WILL GIVE YOU.” What happens when we pray? James 5:16, “THEREFORE, CONFESS YOUR SINS TO ONE ANOTHER AND PRAY FOR ONE ANOTHER, THAT YOU MAY BE HEALED. THE PRAYR OF A RIGHTEOUS PERSON HAS GREAT POWER AS IT IS WORKING.” Great things will happen not only for the individual but for the nations. 2 Chronicles 7:14, “…IF MY PEOPLE WHO ARE CALLED BY MY NAME HUMBLE THEMSELVES, AND PRAY AND SEEK MY FACE AND TURN FROM THEIR WICKED WAYS, THEN I WILL HEAR FROM HEAVEN AND WILL FORGIVE THEIR SIN AND HEAL THEIR LAND.”
What should we pray about? Philippians 4:6, “DO NOT BE ANXIOUS ABOUT ANTHING, BUT IN EVERYTHING BY PRAYER AND SUPPLICATION WITH THANKSGIVING LET YOUR REQUESTS BE MADE KNOWN TO GOD.” Then what happens? Verse 7, “AND THE PEACE OF GOD, WHICH SURPASSES ALL UNDERSTANDING, WILL GUARD YOUR HEARTS AND YOUR MINDS IN CHRIST JESUS.” I don’t know about you, but I could use a little peace right now.
Take time for prayer today. Then make time for prayer tomorrow. And the next day. And every day until we stand in the presence of our Almighty and Holy God.
"NOW MAY THE LORD OF PEACE HIMSELF GIVE YOU PEACE AT ALL TIMES AND IN EVERY WAY. THE LORD BE WITH ALL OF YOU.” (2 Thessalonians 3:16)
