Hello Members and Friends of Son Light,
While the temperatures might not indicate it yet, we are approaching Memorial Day weekend, the unofficial beginning of summer. If that’s true then I completely missed Spring. But I digress. Even though our celebration of this weekend will be very different for most, the reason for the holiday doesn’t change. We honor those who are serving in our armed forces, those who have served and those who gave their lives to protect our country. To anyone reading this who is serving or has served please accept my heartfelt thanks!
One of the problems with having yearly celebrations, though, is that we tend to forget the people or the cause the rest of the year. I know that some of you say “thank you” to every veteran you come across but most of say wait until the end of May and then move on until next year. My fear is that we apply the same thought to our Christian lives.
Have you thanked our loving God for the birth of His Son today (but Mike, Christmas is still a long way off)? Have you fallen on your knees and thanked Jesus for his death and resurrection (come on, Easter was 7 weeks ago!)? Have you expressed your thankfulness for the many, many blessings that God has poured down upon you, naming them one by one (don’t we only do that in November)?
Friends, let’s not get into a rut of only celebrating the goodness of God during certain times of the year. Celebrate the birth, ministry, death and resurrection of Jesus EVERY day. Give thanks for God’s abundance EVERY day. And may I suggest that it’s even more important to list those blessings during a time when so many people are focusing only on what we don’t have or can’t do right now.
As we remember those who gave their lives for our country’s freedoms, may we remember and give thanks to the One who gave His life for our freedom from sin and gives us an assured hope for life eternal in His presence. Celebrate Jesus, not just one day a year but EVERY day!
May you have a happy and safe Memorial Day.
